Macos High Sierra Software Compatibility Issues

Oct 10, 2017  Well said, Pariah. I would only add that if you're still using legacy Creative Suite products, Adobe does NOT update legacy software to work with newer operating systems. For that you must have a Creative Cloud plan. With respect to High Sierra's new Apple File System (APFS), it's worth noting that some Mac users in other non-Adobe forums have reported problems with data files disappearing.

There’s nothing like the release of a new operating system to put apps to the test. Unsurprisingly, some Rocket Yard readers have reported that specific apps are not playing well with High Sierra. Here’s our current list, and please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the post with information on any apps you may have that don’t work properly with High Sierra installed. Apple Apps
Would you believe that some Apple apps need to be updated to a new version to work properly with macOS High Sierra? While the iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, and Numbers), built-in apps (Mail, Safari, etc…) and iLife (iMovie, Photos, GarageBand, etc…) apps are working well with High Sierra, the Pro apps need to be updated to the latest versions. Here are links to the Mac App Store where the latest version can be found:

  • Final Cut Pro X 10.3.4
  • Motion 5.3.2
  • Compressor 4.3.2
  • Logic Pro X 10.3.1
  • MainStage 3.3
Software

Adobe Apps
Adobe suggests that any Creative Cloud versions of its apps be updated to the latest version (this is generally a good practice anytime updates are available). Most ‘CC apps’ should run smoothly with High Sierra, but some issues have been reported, in particular with Illustrator CC 2017 and InDesign CC 2017.

  • MacOS Sierra – Compatibility Issues #240. Sifex opened this issue Jun 16, 2016 242. And avoid super high-res videos, and try rebooting Sierra. Copy link Quote reply jonesinecuador commented Jan 2. I am using 2.4.3i on a famously brain-damaged mid-2010 MBP running Sierra, without this software I would be forced to buy a new one.
  • AKAI Profressional has published a great article, “macOS High Sierra 10.13 and iOS11 Support for Akai Pro Products” that shows their hardware and software’s compatibility with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. A large number of Class-Compliant (do not require a driver) devices are compatible with 10.13 High Sierra and drivers are available for.

Illustrator suffers from multiple issues, one of which can cause installation and application launch failures; others have workarounds. InDesign suffers from cursor corruption issues, which may vary in frequency or severity depending on hardware. Photoshop has an issue related to Full Screen usage but Adobe has already supplied a file that can be downloaded and installed to fix it. For all Adobe-related issues, please visit their official support pages for the latest information.

For CS6 and earlier versions of the suite, the best information we have is that they are not officially supported with 10.13. They may install and work properly or they may not, but in any case no updates are likely to be provided.

Microsoft Office
As noted in an earlier report on macOS High Sierra, Office 2011 is not supported in High Sierra. While some of the apps may still work, there is a good chance they will not based on the information we’ve seen. Note also that Microsoft will no longer support Office 2011 after October 10, 2017, so if you would like to continue using an officially supported version, your only option will be to upgrade to Office 2016 (version 10.35 or higher — current version as of this writing is 15.38).

You can check the version number for Office 2016 by opening any of the apps (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc…) and selecting the “About Excel/Word/…” item from the app menu (see screenshot at right).

Microsoft Auto Update was also reported as having some issues.

Check compatibility

You can upgrade to macOS Sierra from OS X Lion or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 8.8GB of available storage space.

MacBook introduced in late 2009 or later
MacBook Air introduced in late 2010 or later
MacBook Pro introduced in mid 2010 or later
Mac mini introduced in mid 2010 or later
iMac introduced in late 2009 or later
Mac Pro introduced in mid 2010 or later

To find your Mac model, memory, storage space, and macOS version, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu . If your Mac isn't compatible with macOS Sierra, the installer will let you know.

Make a backup

Before installing any upgrade, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. Time Machine makes it simple, and other backup methods are also available. Learn how to back up your Mac.

Get connected

It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.

Download macOS Sierra

For the strongest security and latest features, find out whether you can upgrade to macOS Catalina, the latest version of the Mac operating system.

If you still need macOS Sierra, use this link: Download macOS Sierra. A file named InstallOS.dmg will download to your Mac.

Install the macOS installer

Double-click the downloaded file to open a window showing its contents. Then double-click the file within, named InstallOS.pkg.

Follow the onscreen instructions, which will guide you through the steps necessary to install.

Begin installation

After installation of the installer is complete, open the Applications folder on your Mac, then double-click the file named Install macOS Sierra.

Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

Allow installation to complete

Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.
